Many strategies can be used to assess portfolios. The strategies chosen should reflect the objectives of creating a portfolio in the first place. Three examples are included here.
Checklist - measures a body of work based on criteria for inclusion. This is useful for both student and teachers in assessing the completeness of the portfolio.
Rubric - measures a body of work based on varying degrees of multiple factors. This can be used by teachers in making a qualitative assessment of the portfolio as well as by students in performing self-evaluation of the portfolio.
Rating Scale - measures a body of work based on varying degrees within a criteria. This can be used to measure how well a particular aspect of the process has been addressed and is useful for students in self-evaluation during the reflection process.
